A Fast-Walking DJ Mix for Margaret Russell

We're in the time of COVID-19 and every DJ gig I had for the next two and a half months just dried up. The coast-to-coast bike tour I was supposed to lead all summer for Adventure Cycling? Cancelled!

A long-time family friend, Margaret Russell, asked me to make her a DJ mix for fast-walking around her neighborhood so I assembled this unrelenting, uptempo, hour-long mix of classic rock, pop, 80's, and country music in Ableton Live over five days while social distancing with my mom in Lockhart, TX. I hope you enjoy the "WTF!?" blends and left-turns as much as I enjoyed making them.

If you're wondering why I haven't made a new mix in four years and suddenly made two in the span of two weeks, my answer is that I finally felt like doing it again and both mixes served purposes. The first mix, the high school prom one, was made the week before I DJed an actual high school prom. And this one, the No Lights No Lycra mix, is the fulfillment of an audition mix that I had promised a promoter of an ecstatic dance party in Berkeley (Dance Jam) approximately three years ago.

This hour-long mix is all vinyl and recorded live at an ecstatic dance party here in Austin.

This is a mix I made for a local bar, Hoi Polloi. They have decks and I'd like to use them. The bar only wants hip-hop, instrumental hip-hop, and downtempo tunes so I tried bridging what I like to play with what they want to hear. This mix combines library music, hip-hop, instrumental hip-hop, downtempo disco, and oft-sampled breakbeat tunes. All tracks were ripped from vinyl and arranged in Ableton Live.
